Excerpt from “Pop Quiz”
Sitting at the table in the restaurant Ryan studied the menu, and couldn’t decide which entrée to order. The restaurant was not crowded for a Friday night. Several couples, obviously on dates, occupied the three closest tables. He looked up from the menu, and glanced at a table in the corner where two women conducted a whispered conversation. The women looked familiar, but he didn’t give it a second thought, and resumed his perusal of the menu.
From the corner of his eye, he saw one of the women approach his table. He looked up again from the menu. She smiled at him, and he remembered the face. It had been six years since he last saw her, and she remained ageless and attractive. The hair was as he remembered; dark, curly and untamed. She still wore a denim blouse, a long skirt, and her tanned arms still sported gold bracelets. The glasses were rimless, and seemed more fitting for another time and place, but Ryan remembered she was never a conventional person in manner or fashion.
She stopped walking, and stood next to his table. Her voice was a whisper. “Hello Ryan.”
“Hello, Ms. Kitchens,” said Ryan.
“You’re not in my classroom anymore, Ryan, please call me Marge.”
